Notre Dame Academy Lacrosse - Team Outlook

2007 Notre Dame Academy Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Outlook

After a fourth consecutive VISAA Division II State Semifinal appearance, the Notre Dame Academy boys’ varsity team is poised for an inspired 2007 campaign. The 2006 season brought a series of firsts for the program, including twenty-three wins, a regular season victory over four-time reigning Division II champion Covenant, and a regular season top ranking in Division II. With this being said, the 2007 Dragons are poised and hungry for both state and league championships.

On offense, the Dragons return their entire complement of attackmen for the 2007 campaign. At the head of the unit is returning captain, 100 point scorer, First-team All-State, All-MILL, and All-CAC, and Presbyterian (Division I) commit, Devin Pinkston. Surrounding Devin is fellow captain and St. Leo (Division II) signee Brian MacMahon, as well as Corey Gilmore and Ryan Verfurth. After three seasons of play both at the junior varsity and varsity level, this group of young men possess incredible field awareness, as well as the ability to highlight each players’ skill sets.

In addition to the firepower and talent at the attack position, the 2007 Dragons return a deep and extremely talented group of midfielders. Four blue chip juniors headline the corps of middies in 2007; namely, David Miller, Will Fields, Travis Weidlein, and Matt Manzo. Team co-captain David Miller returns after a First-team All-State, All-MILL, and All-CAC year, in which he crushed the NDA goal scoring record with 82 goals and over 100 points. Will Fields is developing into one of the most dominant face-off players in the Metropolitan area, and adds an additional offensive punch to the Dragons lineup. In addition to the aforementioned players, the future looks incredibly bright for the Dragon midfield with junior Mike Renzi and John Cummings, sophomores Tyler Blevins and Chris Wilson, as well as freshmen Kevin Sherman and Chris Rabung.

At defense, the Dragons display a mixture of youth and talent. Dom Banks is the only senior with the long sticks; he continues to be one of the best long-stick midfielders in VISAA Division II lacrosse. At the core of the close defense are two juniors and a sophomore. Juniors Andrew Larson and Matt Rabung, as well as sophomore Matt Miller anchor a fast and furious defense that can match up with the best attack units in the state. In addition, the Dragons defense is complemented by additional talented players, including juniors Ian Taylor and Logan Andrzejewski, and sophomores Robby Taylor and Matt Entsminger.

However, it is between the pipes that one finds the heart of the Dragons. Senior co-captain, returning First-team All-State Goalie and Washington College commit, Stephen Ide mans the goal for the talented group of defensive players at Notre Dame Academy. With over eighty career starts under his belt, Stephen has established a new standard for goalies at Notre Dame Academy. In addition, Stephen’s strong play and leadership have helped to move the program into the upper levels of competition in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. As Stephen prepares to enter the next phase of his lacrosse career, junior Pat Stein has been playing incredibly hard this off-season, and will most likely compete for the starting job next season.

With national powerhouse teams, like Georgetown Prep and St. Stephen’s-St. Agnes School on the schedule, in addition to the likes of Calverton, The Heights, Good Counsel, and St. Anne’s-Belfield School, the Dragons are determined to test the limits of their intensity, competitiveness, and heart this season. It is with great confidence, as well as months of preparation that the 2007 Notre Dame Academy boys’ varsity squad enters the spring season.
